The nose has a dense network of blood vessels, and filler injected into or against one can block it. That can damage the skin and, rarely, affect eyesight. The warning signs usually appear during or soon after the injection: sudden pain, skin turning white or blotchy, or any change in vision. If you notice them, go back to your injector at once or go to an emergency department. Minutes matter.

Why the nose is a high-risk area

Filler in the nose is often marketed as a “10-minute nose job”. It can work well for small, specific concerns. But the nose is one of the riskiest places on the face to inject.

The arteries that supply the skin of the nose connect with vessels around the eye. If filler enters one of these vessels, it can block the blood supply to the skin. In rare cases, it can travel towards the eye. Patients who have had previous rhinoplasty need extra care, because surgery may have moved the vessels from their usual position.

Warning signs during or after nose filler

Go back to your injector immediately, or to an emergency department, if you notice:

Sudden or severe pain during the injection or soon after, more than expected

Skin turning white (blanching) over the nose or nearby

Blotchy, purple or net-like skin in the hours that follow

Any change in vision: blurring, loss of sight, double vision or eye pain

Dusky skin, blisters or scabs in the following days

Do not wait to see if it settles. Do not massage it on your own unless your doctor tells you to.

Why minutes matter

With hyaluronic acid filler, the most common type, a doctor can inject an enzyme called hyaluronidase to dissolve it and help restore blood flow. This works best when it is given quickly. That is why the clinic matters as much as the product: the injector should be able to recognise a blocked vessel and should have hyaluronidase ready in the room.

Five questions to ask before nose filler

Is the injector a doctor trained in facial anatomy, licensed by DHA or the relevant UAE authority?

What filler is being used, and can it be dissolved?

Is hyaluronidase available in the clinic today?

What is the plan if something goes wrong, and how do I reach you after hours?

Is filler actually right for my concern, or would surgery, or nothing, be better?

Who should avoid nose filler

Filler adds volume. It cannot make a nose smaller, narrower or straighter, and it cannot fix breathing problems. It is usually not suitable for people with thin nasal skin, or for anyone who wants their nose made smaller. People who have had rhinoplasty before need extra caution.

More detail: nose filler vs rhinoplasty. If you are unhappy after a previous nose filler or surgery, see why revision rhinoplasty is needed and what can be fixed.

A surgeon’s view

“Most nose filler treatments go smoothly, but the patient should know what an emergency looks like before it happens. The first few minutes make the difference. Choose a doctor who knows the anatomy and has the antidote in the room.” — Dr Sanjay Parashar

Questions about nose filler or rhinoplasty? Message Dr Sanjay on WhatsApp or book a consultation.

This article is general information and does not replace a consultation.
