Quick answer

A nose looks long when the distance from the bridge to the tip is large compared with the rest of the face. It is usually caused by a long lower septum, a tip that hangs down, a high start to the bridge, or a hump — often several together. It is corrected with rhinoplasty that shortens the nose by lifting the tip, trimming the septum conservatively and balancing the bridge. Over-shortening is the main risk, so changes are measured carefully.

What makes a nose long?

Length is judged against the middle third of the face and against the lip. A long nose often has a drooping tip, and the two problems are treated together. A long nose can also be a feature of ageing, as tip support weakens.

Long septumThe lower edge of the septum pushes the tip down and forward.
Drooping tipThe tip hangs, adding visual length.
High radixThe bridge starts high between the eyes, making the whole nose look longer.
HumpA high bridge draws the eye along its length.

Understanding the anatomy

Labelled diagram of the nose from the side and front: nasal bone, upper lateral cartilage, septal cartilage, lower lateral (alar) cartilage, nostril (ala) and the soft tissue envelope
The structure of the nose. The nasal bone forms the upper third. Below it, the upper lateral cartilages and the lower lateral (alar) cartilages shape the middle and the tip, supported in the midline by the septal cartilage. Everything is covered by the soft tissue envelope, and the nostril (ala) is mostly soft tissue.

Is my nose long? A quick self-check

  • In profile, your tip sits lower than the point where your nostrils meet your lip
  • Pressing your tip up slightly makes your face look better balanced
  • The start of your bridge sits high between your eyes
  • Your nose looks longer in photos than in the mirror

How is a long nose shortened?

  1. Planning: target length and tip angle are measured against your face.
  2. Approach: usually open, because length and tip support change together.
  3. Septum: the lower edge of the septum is trimmed in small, measured steps.
  4. Tip: the tip is rotated upwards and secured to a supporting graft.
  5. Bridge: any hump is reduced; a high radix is gently lowered if needed.
  6. Check: the profile is checked repeatedly so the nose is not shortened too much.
  7. Finish: dissolvable stitches, taping and an external splint for about a week.

Recovery: what to expect week by week

Most people are back at a desk job in 7–10 days; the final shape takes about a year to settle. Timings are typical, not guaranteed.

WhenWhat happensWhat you can do
Day 1Nose feels blocked; mild pain controlled with tablets; splint onRest with head raised; usually home the next day
Days 2–5Swelling and bruising around the eyes peak, then fadeShort walks; no bending or lifting
Day 7Splint and any stitches removedSee your nose for the first time; still swollen
Days 10–14Most bruising goneBack to work and social life
Weeks 3–4Swelling keeps fallingLight exercise
Week 6Bones are stableGym, swimming, glasses resting on the nose
Month 3About 80% of swelling goneNose looks natural to others
Month 12Tip swelling fully settledFinal result; review photos

Specific to nose shortening:

  • The nose can look slightly short and upturned in the first weeks; this settles as swelling goes down
  • The upper lip may feel tight for a few weeks

Dubai-specific tips: avoid direct sun and the beach for 4–5 weeks, use SPF on the nose, and plan around Ramadan fasting and the summer heat. International patients: plan a minimum stay of 7–8 days in Dubai before flying home.

Risks, and how they are reduced

Every operation carries risk. These are the ones that matter most for this problem, and how they are reduced.

RiskWhat it meansHow it is reduced
Over-shorteningNostrils too visible from the front; an upturned lookSmall, measured changes; checking the profile throughout
Loss of tip supportThe tip drops again over timeSupport grafts
Stiff upper lipThe lip feels tight for a few weeksUsually settles
Bleeding or infectionUncommon; usually minorStop blood-thinning medicines and supplements before surgery; sterile, accredited theatre
Prolonged swellingEspecially with thick skin; the tip settles lastTaping, and steroid injections when needed
Numbness, scarring, asymmetryTemporary tip numbness; a fine scar with the open approach; minor asymmetryExplained at consultation
Breathing changesRarely, breathing feels worseAssess the airway before surgery; keep or add support to the nasal valves
Need for revisionA second, usually smaller, operationRealistic planning and staged follow-up
Anaesthesia risksRare in healthy patientsPre-operative tests; certified anaesthetist

Results vary between individuals and cannot be guaranteed. Smoking, some medicines and certain medical conditions increase risk.

Frequently asked questions

Can a nose be made too short?
Yes — over-shortening makes the nostrils too visible and is hard to reverse. That is why shortening is done in small, measured steps.
Is a long nose the same as a droopy tip?
They often go together, but a long nose can also come from the septum or a high bridge. See the droopy tip page.
Will shortening affect my smile?
The upper lip may feel stiff for a few weeks. If the tip dips when you smile, the muscle responsible can be addressed.
Does a long nose get longer with age?
Tip support weakens with age, so the tip can drop and the nose can look longer.
Will there be visible scars?
With a closed approach there are no external scars. With an open approach there is a small scar across the skin between the nostrils, which usually fades to be barely noticeable.
How painful is it, and when can I go back to work?
Most patients describe discomfort and a blocked feeling rather than pain, controlled with tablets. Most return to desk work in 7–10 days.
When can I fly home after surgery?
The splint is removed on day 7 and the final check is on day 8, after which you can usually fly.
What is the right age for rhinoplasty?
Usually from about 18 in girls and 18–19 in boys, once the nose has finished growing — unless there is a severe airway problem.
How do I prepare for my consultation?
Bring front and side photos, a list of your medicines and supplements, and any previous nose surgery reports. Stop smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery.
